Fall Family Mini Sessions at Carter Hill Orchard in Concord, NH

There is just something about fall in New Hampshire. The crisp air, beautiful colors, apple orchards, and the perfect excuse to get the family together for updated photos.

This year, I spent a gorgeous fall Sunday afternoon at Carter Hill Orchard in Concord, New Hampshire, photographing nine amazing families during my annual fall mini sessions.

Some were familiar faces I've had the joy of photographing year after year. Others were brand-new families I got to meet for the first time.

And every single session reminded me why I love family photography so much.

Because here's the thing. My fall mini sessions aren't just about getting that perfect family photo. They're about creating memories while we're taking them.

Fall Mini Sessions at Carter Hill Orchard in Concord, New Hampshire

Carter Hill Orchard is such a beautiful spot for fall family photography in Concord, NH.

Between the apple trees, gorgeous fall scenery, and that beautiful afternoon light, it gave us the perfect setting for a day of family mini sessions.

Each family had approximately 20 minutes with me. Now, you might be thinking, "How much can you really capture in 20 minutes, especially with kids?" The answer? SO much.

We captured family portraits, genuine smiles, movement, laughter, and all those little in-between moments that make each family unique. But the secret isn't getting kids to cooperate perfectly for 20 minutes.

It's making the entire experience fun.

My Approach to Family Photography: Less Posing, More Playing

If you've ever attended one of my New Hampshire family mini sessions, you already know I don't just line everyone up and tell them to smile.

That's not really my style.

Instead, I use prompts, games, and movement to get families interacting with each other. I want the kids to laugh. I want parents to relax. I want everyone to forget, even for a few minutes, that they're having their pictures taken.

Because those genuine reactions? That's where the magic happens.

And honestly, I LOVE photographing young kids for this exact reason.

They don't need to stand perfectly still. They don't need to look at my camera the entire time. And they definitely don't need to give me those forced, cheesy smiles. If I need to joke around, bounce around, or let a kid throw a stuffed animal at me just to get a good laugh, I'm all for it. If that stuffed animal bonks me on the head and everyone bursts out laughing? Even better!

Those are the moments I want to capture.

The Blanket Swing: My Favorite Family Photography Prompt This Fall

This year, I introduced a brand-new prompt during my fall mini sessions at Carter Hill Orchard.

And I think it might be my favorite one yet.

First, I had the kids sit on a blanket.

Then I asked them a very important question.

"Do you think Mom and Dad can turn this blanket into a swing?!"

Some kids looked a little nervous. Others were immediately ready for the adventure. And some couldn't stop laughing before we even got started.

Then came the giggles, excitement, huge smiles, and genuine reactions.

Every family responded a little differently, which made the photos even better. That's what I love about using prompts during family photography sessions. I'm not trying to create the exact same photograph for every family. I'm creating opportunities for their personalities to shine through. And while we're doing that, we're making memories right there in the apple orchard.

Why 20-Minute Family Mini Sessions Are Perfect for Young Kids

I know getting everyone dressed, ready, and out the door for family photos can feel like a whole production. Especially when you have little ones. But here's what I want parents to know.

Your kids don't have to behave perfectly for us to get beautiful photos.

In fact, I'd rather they didn't worry about being perfect at all. Kids need movement. They need opportunities to play, explore, and be themselves. That's why I build movement and interaction into my family mini sessions. We can play games, tell jokes, snuggle, dance, and create moments that bring out natural smiles.

And because mini sessions are short and sweet, we can capture a wonderful variety of images without making the experience feel overwhelming. My goal is for your family to leave thinking, "That was actually really fun!"

Not just, "Phew, we survived family pictures!"

Because a quick Sunday afternoon at an apple orchard, dressed in the cute outfits Mom picked out, can become a core memory for the whole family.

Why I'll Always Make Time for New Hampshire Family Mini Sessions

As my photography and content creation business continues to grow, I find myself working on all kinds of different projects.

But one thing will never change.

I will always make space for family mini sessions.

They bring me so much joy.

I love seeing returning families year after year. Watching kids grow, personalities change, and families create new memories is one of my favorite parts of this business. And I love meeting new families who are experiencing a session with me for the first time. Every family brings something different. Every session has its own energy. And every year, I walk away feeling so grateful that I get to do this.

These fall mini sessions at Carter Hill Orchard were no exception.

Nine families. One beautiful fall afternoon. And so many little moments worth remembering.
